Free Car Show Benefits Rady Children's Hospital

Patrick Ivison's favorite T-shirt reads, "Life rolls on." That's a perfect fit for this teen who is always on the move, whether he's playing rugby, kayaking or surfing-and learning to scuba dive is next. Patrick is determined not to miss out on anything, despite the fact that he uses a wheelchair. With limited mobility and feeling in his arms and legs, he is considered a quadriplegic because his condition affects all four limbs. But that doesn't stop him from new challenges.

Chance and Cadence Mitchell both had open heart surgeries to repair congenital heart defects before they were even school-age. Chance, at five years old, has a pacemaker, and Cadence, nearly three, had her first heart surgery at four days old. But both love playing, exploring and daring any health challenges to slow them down.

These children are determined to keep their lives moving forward. Their stories, and those of other young patients at Rady Children's hospital, inspired local credit unions to create the "Credit Unions and Cars for Kids" car show, with all proceeds benefitting the hospital.

The 2nd Annual Credit Unions and Cars for Kids will be on Sunday, May 4, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Fun Bike Center San Diego, 5755 Kearny Villa Road. The event features more than 200 cars, live music, food, opportunity drawing, prizes and admission is free.

The car show is coordinated by Financial 21 Community Credit Union, California Coast Credit Union, Inland Federal Credit Union, Navy Federal Credit Union and San Diego Medical Credit Union, New Cars, Inc. and Lance Pelky, RFC. Other local credit unions are encouraging their members to attend.

Admission is free. The donation to Rady Children's Hospital is made possible by the generosity of sponsors, vendors and car show contestants.

Patrick, Chance and Cadence and their families are planning to attend the car show. For them, it's another opportunity to experience something new, have fun and show that life does indeed roll on.
