BOARDS OF TWO AREA CREDIT UNIONS AGREE TO UNITE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact: Vince Heald or Dennis Ellman – 858-453-9600

The Boards of Directors of First Future Credit Union and California Coast Credit Union have approved a consolidation of the two financial institutions, pending approval by state and federal regulators and members of First Future Credit Union.

The new organization, which would operate as California Coast Credit Union, would serve approximately 130,000 members with 26 full-service branches and nearly 500 employees. With combined assets of over $1.8 billion, it would become the second largest credit union in San Diego.

According to a joint announcement, First Future Credit Union’s current President and Chief Executive Officer, Marla Shepard, would head the new California Coast Credit Union. Kathy Cady, presently Senior Vice President, Member Services at California Coast, would serve as Chief Operating Officer. California Coast’s current President and Chief Executive Officer, Jim McPheters, will be retiring after leading the credit union for 21 years and serving the financial industry for 35 years.

“The Boards are enthusiastic about the enhanced benefits to the members of both credit unions that will result from this new entity,” Shepard stated. “We are excited about the combined strengths in this consolidation of equals. Both First Future Credit Union and California Coast Credit Union are financially sound with strong capital positions that combined come to nearly $180 million in reserves. Both also have a long history that clearly demonstrates a shared philosophy of providing exceptional value and service to members.”

All staff would be offered a position in the new credit union and the consolidation would provide greater career opportunities for employees, according to McPheters.

“This is not like a bank merger designed to make money for stockholders,” McPheters explained. “This is a credit union consolidation to benefit members by providing more branch offices, very competitive rates, enhanced technology, new services, and the same knowledgeable, friendly employees whom members value, as evidenced by their very high service ratings.”

###

Established in 1929, California Coast Credit Union is San Diego’s oldest credit union with over 66,000 members and more than $900 million in assets. The credit union serves the local educational community and has 11 branch offices.

First Future Credit Union has been operating since 1939 and serves more than 62,000 members. With over $930 million in assets, First Future features 15 branches serving nearly 400 area employer groups. Membership is open to anyone who lives, works or worships in San Diego or Riverside County.

Both credit unions are part of the largest surcharge-free ATM network in the country and a national “shared branch” network, providing members with quality, convenient and secure financial services.

California Coast Credit Union Honored for Financial Literacy Work

San Diego-Based Credit Union Recognized With State Foundation’s Highest Honor

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

San Diego - California Coast Credit Union believes that financial literacy is important, helping to empower youth and adults in becoming financially independent and successful. To that end, the San Diego-based credit union has developed and implemented several financial literacy outreach programs for people of all ages.

“We believe that assisting people to develop the right financial habits can change their futures,” said Rene McKee, Vice President of Marketing. “Financial literacy also benefits California Coast as a member organization because both members and the larger community can see the credit union difference.”

Its financial literacy efforts for students reached about 1,000 youth from August 2006 through August 2007, through local schools and the Boys and Girls Club. The customized programs ranged from one-class sessions to Money Matters, an after-school teen program at the Boys and Girls Club for at-risk youth, to a day-long workshop for 300 at-risk high school seniors and a week-long Money Camp day camp for 50 fifth- through eighth-graders. The credit union also serves on a new Financial Literacy Task Force that has developed a personal finance curriculum for senior high students, implemented during the 2006-2007 school year in San Diego Unified School District.

The credit union also offered 20 no-cost evening workshops, reaching about 800 members. The workshops’ topics ranged from personal financial basics to retirement investment. California Coast representatives discussed financial topics relevant to today’s consumers on 32 live television news interviews and 12 print interviews throughout this past year.

For these and other financial literacy efforts, California Coast was the organizational recipient of the recent Beacon Award from the Richard Myles Johnson (RMJ) Foundation, the state foundation for credit unions in California and Nevada. The organizational and individual awards were presented at the fourth annual Beacon Awards Gala Reception at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in San Diego.

“It was difficult selecting two winners from among this year’s crop of worthy entries,” said Marie Alonzo, chairman of the Beacon Awards nomination committee and board chairman of Arrowhead Credit Union in San Bernardino.

The Beacon Award, the Foundation’s highest honor, recognizes promising or exemplary financial education programs or projects that provide information to the broader credit union community and the general public.

The Richard Myles Johnson Foundation champions and supports youth financial education within the communities served by credit unions. The Foundation is funded through donations from credit unions, League chapters, corporations providing credit union services, and individuals. More information about the Foundation is available at its website at www.rmjfoundation.org.

Under his leadership, the credit union’s membership has increased from 18,000 to more than 66,000 members. McPheters has guided the credit union from one San Diego branch in 1986 to 11 branches today throughout San Diego and Riverside Counties.

From 2005-2006, McPheters also served as Chair of the Board of Directors for California Credit Union League (CCUL), a statewide trade association of credit unions.

Rick Knott, Chairman, Board of the Directors of California Coast, noted that the Board expressed its deep appreciation to McPheters for his long, dedicated and successful service to California Coast.

“Under Jim’s leadership, we have enjoyed tremendous growth both in our size and in the innovative services we have been able to offer our members,” Knott said. “With Jim’s direction, the credit union grew while maintaining its passion for personalized, caring service to each member. We are grateful for his leadership and loyalty, and we wish him well in his retirement and future activities.”

Under McPheters’ leadership, California Coast earned the Award for Workplace Excellence from Peter Barron Stark & Associates in the years 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. Thanks to McPheters’ ongoing support of financial education for all ages, California Coast received the top award for financial literacy among California credit unions from the Richard Myles Johnson Foundation in 2007.

A native of Wellsville, New York, Jim graduated from the University of Arizona at Tucson with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. PERRIS RESIDENT GETS HER MOTOR RUNNING BY WINNING YEAR’S WORTH OF FREE GAS THROUGH CREDIT UNION PROMOTION

Contact: Vince Heald or Crisel Ortiz (858) 453-9600

MURRIETA -- California Coast Credit Union’s Murrieta branch helped brighten the holiday season for Perris resident Jessica Ruiz by awarding her free gasoline for one year as part of the credit union’s recent auto loan refinancing promotion.

California Coast Credit Union ran the promotion from last July through the end of November to help credit union members lower their monthly auto loan payments. Members were offered the opportunity to refinance their existing auto loans at other financial institutions and move their loan to California Coast Credit Union at a lower rate. Those who took advantage of the promotion or who sent in a 3 x 5 card were entered into the drawing to award the $100 monthly gas card good for one year.

Winning the contest drawing couldn’t have come at a better time for Ruiz, who was laid off from her job at a mortgage company in early December. Three days before Christmas, she was notified by California Coast Credit Union that she had won.

"Receiving that check was a really big help to me, especially since I was laid off recently," Ruiz said. "And with gas prices so high and likely to keep climbing, the free gas will be a big savings and will really come in handy for me. I got lucky not only with the free gas but also with a much better loan rate."

California Coast Credit Union, which has operated in San Diego County since its founding as a credit union for teachers in 1929, has been expanding its presence into the southwestern Riverside County market over the past several years. The credit union opened its first branch in Temecula in 2004 followed by the opening of the Murrieta branch in 2005.

$1,000 DREAM CLASSROOM GRANT MAKES MATH COME ALIVE

Chula Vista, CA – Lisa Shyu, a sixth grade teacher at Hazel Goes Cook Elementary, is this month’s recipient of the CW Dream Classroom. She was awarded a $1,000 cash grant to aid in the education of her students. Shyu and her students were featured on CW News at Ten on December 2 and a public service announcement will air throughout the month of December.

As a new teacher, Shyu is struggling to make education more academically rewarding for her students. She wants to create a learning environment where students feel encouraged to learn. Unfortunately, due to the limited budget her classroom is not supplied with enough equipment to allow for students to work with hands on activities. The $1,000 grant has allowed her to purchase manipulatives for each student which include fraction bars, base ten blocks, geoboards and a variety of other items. She is also working on opening math centers to enhance learning among students. The new supplies will “make math come alive for these students,” Shyu says. She hopes that her students can apply these lessons in life for years to come.

Every month, San Diego’s CW and California Coast Credit Union award one San Diego teacher with the Dream Classroom, honoring that teacher’s commitment to students and their improved education. The winning teacher receives a $1,000 grant for customization of the Dream Classroom. The CW Dream Classroom is sponsored by California Coast Credit Union. EARLY PREPARATION CAN TAKE THE FINANCIAL PINCH OUT OF HOLIDAY SPENDING

Contact: Vince Heald or Crisel Ortiz (858) 453-9600

SAN DIEGO -- The holiday shopping season will be upon us before too long and with it comes a sudden increase in spending, not only on gifts but also on traveling and entertaining. By following a few simple financial guidelines, says Rene McKee, California Coast Credit Union; vice president of marketing, consumers can be better prepared to handle holiday expenses and keep a tighter lid on spending.

One of the best ways to manage your money during this time, McKee says, is to create a holiday spending budget and start saving early.

“A great way to save at the holidays is knowing how much you’re going to spend ahead of time and not waiting until the last minute to decide,” she said. “In other words, if you decide on a holiday budget of $500, work within that number. A good way to make sure you have the dollars available is to set aside a certain amount each week or payday.”

For example, with a holiday budget of $500, divide that amount by the number of weeks you have to save (12) and set aside that amount each week from your paycheck ($41.67). A payroll deduction or automatic deposit from your checking to savings account can make this easy for you, McKee said.

Although it sounds simple enough, McKee says, people often fail to grasp the obvious: start planning and saving early.

“If you are saving your money to spend at a later date, check with your credit union to see if they have a holiday club account,” she adds. “This type of account will allow for deposits up until a specific date, at which point you can withdraw your contributions plus dividends.” A savings account will work just as well if your credit union does not have this type of account.

Another smart idea is to shop early. It is common knowledge that shopping right after the holidays is an effective way to save money, but don’t forget about shopping for items well before the holidays.

“Keeping an eye out for stores that are going out of business, special sales and other types of promotional events are a great way to not only save you money but also keep you out of those long lines during the holiday rush,” McKee said.

McKee offers a few additional common sense tips.

Just by setting aside the spare change you bring home every day, you will have some extra money available for spending during the holidays.

You can also use your creative talents to make holiday gifts. It’s not only fun and rewarding, but a great way to save money. All of those photos you have tucked away, for example, can make a wonderful scrapbook, which can last a lot longer than a box of candy or slippers.

Just following these simple steps can make a noticeable difference in your finances this coming holiday season and take some of the worry and stress out of wondering where that extra money will come from.

California Coast Credit Union ranked top in state in value provided to members

By BECK ELLMAN HEALD, California Coast Credit Union
Friday, July 14, 2006

When it comes to providing value for members, California Coast Credit Union truly makes the grade. California Coast scored top in the state with 99.9 percent out of 100 percent on Callahan & Associates' Return of the Member Index.

Callahan & Associates, a national credit union research and consulting firm, created this index for credit unions to measure their most important asset -- their members' use of the credit union, and the value the credit union provides to members. The calculation considers the three core credit union functions of product usage, lending and savings, including the rates offered to members.

The ranking system takes into account a credit union's performance in comparison with its asset peer group. In the study, California Coast scored better than any other California credit union, and 10th in the nation out of 8,981 credit unions. This is another example of the credit union difference, because credit unions, unlike other financial institutions, focus on giving back to the members.

The Return of the Member (ROM) Index helps measure the credit union industry's overall progress in the area of member service by providing data that allows credit unions to determine where they stand among their peers in the traditional areas of safety and soundness, lending, deposits and expenses.

California Coast received a 99.55 percentile ranking, and earned similarly high marks in additional categories that serve as core components of the ROM index, including return to savers, return to borrowers and member service usage. The ranking system is an index calculation that takes into account a credit union's performance in comparison with its asset peer group. A top score of 100 indicates that the credit union is considered a leader in providing services to its members.

"Credit unions are constantly striving to improve the value provided to their members," said Rene McKee, vice president of marketing at California Coast Credit Union. "This report and ranking helps us better understand our credit union's product usage levels and allows us to determine the areas where we are performing well and where we need to improve. Overall, we're extremely pleased with this ranking, but at the same time, we realize that there is always some room for improvement. Our strong performance is testimony to the concerted efforts made by our dedicated staff to provide the highest levels of member service."

As part of its continuing support of education, California Coast Credit Union recently awarded scholarships totaling $12,000 to five outstanding area high school seniors who will attend college full-time in the fall.

California Coast awarded one $5,000 scholarship, two $2,500 scholarships and two $1,000 scholarships, recognizing students for their academic achievements, community involvement and extracurricular activities. The students also wrote an essay about an example of how they demonstrated the credit union principle of “people helping people.”

“As an institution founded to serve the financial needs of San Diego teachers, California Coast continues to be a major supporter of community education-related causes,” said Jim McPheters, President and CEO of California Coast Credit Union. “This annual scholarship program not only recognizes outstanding students for their academic excellence and community support, but also provides opportunities to those who are serious about learning and wish to continue their education.”

The following students received 2006 California Coast Credit Union scholarships after a record number of applications were received:

Heather Tustin of Horizon High School was awarded the $5,000 California Coast scholarship. A Kearny Mesa resident, Heather will attend Seattle Pacific University, where she plans to study biology/pre-healthcare with plans to provide healthcare for those less fortunate around the world.

TEACHER GROWS STUDENTS' MINDS FROM THE INSIDE OUT WITH INDOOR GARDEN

San Diego, CA - Leo Bechtold, a science lab teacher at Carver Elementary, is this month's recipient of the KSWB Dream Classroom. He has been awarded a $1000 cash grant to help him create an indoor science garden. Mr. Bechtold and his students were featured on WB News at Ten on June 2 and a public service announcement will air throughout the month of June.

Located in a low-income neighborhood, Carver Elementary experiences frequent vandalism and an outdoor garden has not been possible. The grant will help Bechtold create an indoor garden where 300 students grades K-5 will learn the important role plants play in their lives. "Gardening is hands-on and a great way to motivate students. The majority of Carver's students are English learners. Hands-on science is one of the best ways to improve their English skills," says Bechtold.

Bechtold believes that understanding the role of plants in their environment is key to his students understanding of the natural world. Gardening will help them explore how plants control erosion on the hills in their neighborhood, their medicinal qualities and even teach them about complicated environmental and political issues. Bechtold plans to purchase plant growing stand lights, seed pellets and a root view chamber with the $1,000 grant.

Every month, KSWB 5/69 and California Coast Credit Union award one San Diego teacher with the Dream Classroom, honoring that teacher's commitment to students and their improved education. The winning teacher receives a $1,000 grant for customization of the Dream Classroom. The KSWB Dream Classroom is sponsored by California Coast Credit Union. TEACHER RECEIVES DREAM CLASSROOM AWARD FOR AMERINCAN SIGN LANGUAGE CLASSROOM

San Diego, CA - Ingrid Swenson, a preschool teacher for the "Deaf and Hard of Hearing" program at Lafayette Elementary is this month's recipient of the KSWB Dream Classroom. She has been awarded a $1000 cash grant to aid in the education of her highly gifted students. Ms. Swenson and her students will be featured on WB News at Ten on May 6 and in a public service announcement airing throughout the month of May.

Ingrid Swenson has been teaching for only a year and yet has realized the additional costs needed to run a classroom, especially a classroom for the deaf and hard of hearing. Often ASL or special literacy materials are scarcely available which forces teachers like Swenson to make or purchase learning materials with her own money.

With the one-thousand dollar grant, Swenson plans on purchasing special books, flashcards and DVD's that include pictures of sign language and ASL storytelling. Swenson says that she would also like to use the money to purchase materials "that include stories about children who are deaf and stories in sign language". CALIFORNIA COAST CREDIT UNION HOLDS BOOK DRIVE TO SUPPORT SAN DIEGO’S LITERACY EFFORTS

Contact: Vince Heald or Crisel Ortiz (858) 453-9600

SAN DIEGO -- Imagine the thrill a mother, who once couldn’t read, now gets from reading her child a bedtime story. Consider the self-esteem that a man now feels because of the knowledge he’s gained from reading the daily newspaper on his commute to work. Picture the satisfaction a formerly unemployed young woman now experiences when she cashes her paycheck, grateful she could finally read a job application so that she can work. Each has benefited tremendously from the literacy efforts that vastly improved the quality of their lives -- efforts that begin and end with books.

As a prelude to the annual Union-Tribune Race for Literacy on May 6-7, which it is sponsoring for a third consecutive year, California Coast Credit Union will hold a book drive to help support the San Diego Council on Literacy’s reading programs throughout the county.

Credit union members as well as the general public are being asked to help spread the joy of reading to many thousands of literacy-challenged San Diegans by bringing new or gently used book donations to any of California Coast Credit Union’s 11 branches in San Diego and Riverside Counties from now through May 3.

“April and May are traditionally spring cleaning months, so this is a great time to collect your slightly used best-sellers or children’s books that are in good condition so that others can experience the pleasure of reading,” said Rene McKee, VP Marketing for California Coast. “For those who may not have books around their homes to donate, used book stores can also be a great source for obtaining inexpensive books suitable for donations. Every book donation we receive will be a big help for people who desire to become more literate.”

It is estimated that more than 450,000 adults in San Diego County have a below-standard level of literacy.

According to Chris McFadden of the SD Council on Literacy, more than 105,000 adults and youth throughout the county participated in the 22 free literacy programs supported by the Council in 2005, due in large part to the additional exposure the literacy issue has received through local events like the annual Race for Literacy.

“California Coast Credit Union, which has a long history in San Diego of supporting education and education-related causes, has continually demonstrated its commitment to the literacy efforts being undertaken in the county,” McFadden said.

“Because it was initially established as a credit union for teachers, reading and literacy are especially important causes to them, and as a result of their continued involvement in the literacy effort in San Diego, the programs supported by the Council have grown stronger and have been able to reach many more people. By holding this book drive, they are not only building excitement and anticipation for the event, but they are also helping our affiliated programs significantly expand their ability to provide vital reading materials to those who need them.”

Jim McPheters, CEO of California Coast Credit Union, said his organization is very proud to be associated with the event again this year.

“Literacy skills contribute significantly to an improved quality of life and greater economic well-being,” McPheters said. “So we’re encouraging all San Diegans to take part in both the book drive and the race, show their support for a great cause and have a good time. Our entire community will be better off because of important events like this one.”

TEACHER RECEIVES DREAM CLASSROOM AWARD TO ENRICH STUDENTS LIBRARY

CHULA VISTA, CA - Christina May, a teacher at Clear Charter View Elementary, is this month's recipient of the KSWB Dream Classroom. She has been awarded a $1000 cash grant to help enrich her student's learning environment. Ms. May and her students will be featured on WB News at Ten on April 1, and in a public service announcement airing throughout the month of April.

After 5 years of teaching, Ms. Christina May has realized the additional costs needed to run a classroom and has often spent her own money to ensure that her students have the necessary supplies. "I'm always looking everywhere I go for resources to benefit my students and my classroom."

Reading is very important to Ms. May and her curricular focus is getting students excited about reading and exposing them to a variety of texts. Her classroom project, Book Buddies, pairs a younger classroom with a more experienced one in order to enhance reading skills. With the Dream Classroom grant, Ms. May plans to purchase rich reading material for the program and for the classroom library.

TEMECULA – California State PTAs 23rd District-Riverside has awarded California Coast Credit Union the 2005 Business Hall of Fame Award in recognition of their ongoing support of education.

California Coast Community Relations Manager Lynn Laing accepted the award on behalf of the credit union during an awards banquet at the Eagle Glen Golf Club in Corona.

“Through her helping hands and kind heart, Lynn has identified needs and arranged for California Coast’s contribution of more than $8,500 in goods and services to our schools,” said Marsi Yount, Temecula Valley Council PTA (TVCPTA) Executive Committee member.

“Because of these donations we have been able to use our funds for much-needed programs and services that benefit the students of Temecula Valley,” Yount said. “And with the state budget crunch limiting the resources for our schools, this business partnership with California Coast Credit Union has been invaluable to the Temecula Valley Council PTA.”

Laing first introduced California Coast to the TVCPTA when the credit union opened its Temecula branch in Riverside County last year and invited each school in the council to participate in a grand opening celebration. Each participating school received $300 from California Coast Credit Union, which was funneled through the PTA to use toward programs where there was a defined need.

Since California Coast opened its Temecula branch office, the credit union has donated school supplies for children who couldn’t afford them, conducted free child fingerprinting at various community events, and has donated computers for special education programs. California Coast employees have also helped children prepare for the future by going out into the community on a regular basis and teaching elementary and middle school students the value of financial literacy and managing their money.

“I am delighted that California Coast received the Business Hall of Fame Award,” Laing said. “It’s gratifying for us to make a difference for students in the community. As an organization, California Coast always has and always will continue to place great importance on the value of education, not only for the individual, but for the community and for society as a whole.”

Banks and Credit Unions are Two Very Different Species
Special to the San Diego Daily Transcript
By René McKee, Vice President of Marketing, California Coast Credit Union

SAN DIEGO, CA – On the surface, banks and credit unions appear to have many similarities. They both accept deposits, pay interest, offer an assortment of financial services like savings and checking accounts, make loans and offer credit cards.

But consumers should be aware of several major differences between the two when faced with selecting the type of financial institution that is best suited to their needs.

Banks and savings and loan institutions are profit-oriented businesses, owned by stockholders who share in the profits by receiving dividend checks. Credit unions are not-for-profit organizations owned by the members and any profits come back to them in the form of lower loan rates, higher interest rates and free or low-cost services. Banks and credit unions are governed by a Board of Directors, but the essential difference lies in how the directors are compensated. Banks monetarily compensate their board members, whose purpose is to set policies that maximize profits and bring higher returns to stockholders. Credit union board members, on the other hand, are volunteers whose goal is to ensure that the credit union’s policies are serving members’ needs well. Credit union members elect their board of directors and each credit union member, regardless of their savings account balance, has one equal vote in electing the board of directors. A bank’s stockholders select, not elect, their board’s representatives. Consumers will pay less, and sometimes nothing, in service fees if they belong to a credit union rather than a bank. According to the Consumer Federation of America, only 15% of the nearly 11,000 credit unions nationwide charge fees on checking accounts, for example, compared to 86% of banks. Per check fees are even lower, as only six per cent of credit unions charge these fees versus 95% of all banks. Fees for money orders and cashier’s checks are about 55-65% lower at credit unions than they are at banks.

Credit unions typically provide greater returns on savings than do banks and other financial institutions, and also charge less interest on loans. Service is probably the number one attraction for credit union members, as evidenced by the results of an American Banker opinion poll in which they claimed credit union members were the “most satisfied” with their service. For more than a dozen years the poll results indicate that credit union members are more satisfied than any other group of financial institution customers, including banks and thrifts. Another big difference is the institution’s perception of its depositors. At a credit union, a depositor is a member of the credit union and has an ownership share in the institution, while at a bank the depositor is merely a customer. A credit union exists to serve the members’ needs, not to profit from them, as is the case with customers of a bank. Founded on the philosophy of people helping people, a credit union is representative of a cooperative model whereby people pool their resources for the good of all. As owners of the credit union, members share in its overall performance.

Safeguarding funds is of utmost concern for customers. Credit unions protect members’ savings up to $100,000 through the National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund (NCUSIF), a deposit insurance program similar to the Bank Insurance Fund (BIF) program that insures bank deposits. The National Credit Union Administration, a U.S. government agency, administers the NCUSIF fund, which is as strong, or stronger than any other deposit insurance program offered by the federal government. It is backed by the full faith and credit of the U.S. government.“Certainly, banks serve a legitimate purpose,” said Jim McPheters, President and CEO of California Coast Credit Union, San Diego’s fourth largest. “But we believe credit unions offer some very specialized and attractive benefits that banks cannot, simply by virtue of their charters and the way they are organized.

“We believe it’s in the consumers’ best interests to at least investigate some of these differences and make up their own minds,” he added. “But our feeling is that if you can find lower service fees, get better rates of returns than banks, and get the extra level of service you’d like, why wouldn’t you join a credit union?” In the U.S., there are nearly 11,000 credit unions serving 80 million members. Total assets number nearly $490 billion, with $390 billion in total savings.
